The Time Bandit of the 7th Ward is a public art and gaming installation inspired by the rich Black history of Philadelphia’s 7th Ward and new myths of the Afrofuture. Artist Li Sumpter invites the community to try their luck and spin the reels of the mysterious “Time Bandit” slot machine customized with an original lexicon of symbols connected to the Graffiti in the Grass transmedia narrative still unfolding. Tapping into the Tarot tradition, games of chance, and the art of “time-binding”, Sumpter’s new multidisciplinary work blurs the lines between art and artifact, history and mythos, past and present. Sited at Rex at the Royal located at 1524 South Street, Sumpter's immersive installation brings together cultural traditions and creative collaborators from multiple generations including Philly-based photographers Andrea Walls and Ken McFarlane and artist/sculptor Phil Sumpter, the artist’s father and former long-time resident of the 7th Ward.
